Who is Jesus? by Rev. Khawl Ro Kima, Pastor Yangon BPC & Overseer of Myanmar Mission (Banner 6/19)
There are three incidents that led me to write this article. First, one day an evangelist who tried to share the gospel to a village asked the local people this question: “Do you know Jesus?” The villagers replied, “Jesus? We do not know Him. Maybe He is from another village. You ask other people, they might know Him.” The second incident is an experience a Buddhist convert told me. This man left his parents, but later he became a Christian. One day he visited his poor parents to stay with them for a while. Just before he left home, his mother said, “Son, we have nothing to give you but feel free to take anything from our house.” As the son looked around, he saw Jesus’s picture hanging on the wall. He took that picture and asked his parents, “Why do you hang Jesus picture?” His parents said, “Son, who is Jesus? Is not this a cowboy picture?” [They just assumed that men with long hair are cowboys]. Third, recently I watched a short video clip from YouTube where a man is asking the Jews in Jerusalem: “Who is Jesus?” Their answers clearly show that the Jews still do not know Jesus.
All these incidents made me think and realize that we Christians need to evangelize the world. There are many who still do not know Jesus, even in Jerusalem where the gospel was first preached. We know the apostles once preached the gospel in Jerusalem, but today Jerusalem does not know Jesus. Likewise, we may reach out to our community today, but it is possible that Jesus is totally alien to the next generation. We see this is happening in Europe and even some parts in the US.
Let’s give our attention and energy more to the evangelization of the world. Our duty is not to create mere outward Christian culture in the world but the evangelization of the whole world— telling them who Jesus is and what he has done for us. Let us “Declare His glory among the heathen, His wonders among all people” (Psalm 96:3).
