PMU’s 39th Annual Council Meeting Sounds a Note of Praise and Future Planning

by Rev. Casey Southerland
PMU Field Director in Cincinnati, Ohio
the Missions Banner, August/September 2023:  Print Edition

PMU’s annual meeting, which was graciously hosted at Grace Reformed Presbyterian Church in Greeneville, TN, was opened with a message from President Kevin Backus, who challenged the council from 2 Timothy 3 to continue steadfast in the work of the Lord amidst times of difficulty.  We praise the Lord that the questions raised in the recent past regarding tax-exemption have been settled favorably for PMU.  Now, PMU looks to make the most of opportunities the Lord has presented to  “Bring Souls to Jesus”.

After the opening message, the council shared in a season of prayer with the missionaries present.  Early in the meeting the council elected new officers, with Dr. Kevin Backus elected to serve as President and Rev. James S. Blizzard as the Vice-President.  We were also glad to add to the council Elder Jon Eskola (TN), Rev. Carl van der Merwe (TN), and Rev. David Joonkyung Chi (NY).

Reports and prayers were offered for all of the mission fields.   We prayed for Rev. Waeber and opportunities the Lord has been providing, even while the hope of establishing a church in Lockland, OH has come to a close.  A great note of praise relates to the reinstitution of Rev. Andy Yong as a PMU missionary after more than a year’s interruption due to his immigration status.  The council approved reinstating Rev. Yong once his Work Permit was approved.  When Rev. Yong returned home from Synod, he found a letter stating that it had been approved just two days prior to the Annual Meeting.  Praise the Lord, Pastor Andy’s account is once again open to receive support for the Korean Church plant in Tacoma, WA.

In other praises, the meeting included the approval of an annual summer internship to provide much-needed help to Rev. and Mrs. Douma for the ministry of SOLA during the Appalachian Trail’s busy season.  The council is also considering how best to provide ongoing support to the Leamans, after a successful English Camp ministry through Team Timothy in Brazil.  In addition, a domestic Team Timothy ministry was approved to help a BP church plant in McCall, Idaho.

We invite you to support, through prayer and funds, PMU’s council, staff and missionaries in serving the cause of Jesus Christ through Bible Presbyterian missions at home and around the world.
