The ultimate end of all things is the glory of God. The creation of the universe, the creation of man, the salvation of sinners, and even the coming of the new heavens and new earth—all exist to manifest God’s glory. What, then, is the purpose of the church? It too is to glorify God.
Reflecting on Covenant Bible Presbyterian Mission, I am persuaded that its very existence magnifies His glory. Years ago, a Korean believer at Tacoma BPC longed to worship in her native tongue. After three years of prayer, God sent Rev. Yong-Seok Han of Calvary BPC, who traveled sixty miles once a month to lead worship. Through this answer to prayer, the glory of God’s mercy was displayed—He hears even one person’s cry.
In 2015, after my ordination as a church planter, this ministry was renewed through weekly worship. Many of you recall the trials that followed: repeated relocations and my own immigration challenges that made me leave the pulpit for a while. There were some moments when I wondered if we must cease this mission work altogether. Yet by God’s providence, the mission has endured every trial and continues to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ and to teach Reformed theology to the Korean community in the Tacoma area to this day. By God’s extraordinary help, He raised up churches and individuals to sustain our family and He sent His people to this congregation.
Thus the clearest testimony of God’s glory in Covenant is this: the work began as an answer to prayer and continues as an answer to prayer. God begins and sustains His Church for His glory. As long as the Lord grants it life, Covenant will exist for one purpose alone—to glorify God.
